PARRY SOUND – The Ontario government is investing $544,350 through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) in two economic development projects in the Parry Sound region. This investment will improve municipal infrastructure, boost tourism, and improve quality of life in Northeastern Ontario.

“This investment into West Parry Sound reflects our government’s commitment to ensuring rural and northern communities have the resources they require to grow and prosper,” said Graydon Smith, MPP for Parry Sound-Muskoka. “We’re making targeted investments into people, businesses and infrastructure that will facilitate economic growth and increase quality of life for local residents.”

The NOHFC is funding the following projects:

  • $450,000 for Seguin Township to replace the Humphrey Community Centre roof to create a safer environment for visitors and staff, extend the facility’s lifespan and make it more energy efficient
  • $94,350 for the Town of Parry Sound to modernize and redesign the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame to create new exhibit space and make the hall more energy efficient.

“Our government is committed to revitalizing community infrastructure here in the Parry Sound region and across the North,” said Greg Rickford, Minister of Northern Development. “We are focused on keeping our northern communities competitive and current, making them attractive places to live, work, play and do business.”

The NOHFC promotes economic prosperity across Northern Ontario by providing financial assistance to projects—big and small, rural and urban—that stimulate growth, job creation and skills development. Since June 2018, the NOHFC has invested more than $613 million in 5,214 projects in Northern Ontario, leveraging more than $1.94 billion in investment and creating or sustaining over 8,240 jobs.

QUICK FACTS

  • The Ontario government launched new and improved NOHFC programs that support more projects in rural northern communities and make it easier for more people and businesses to apply. The programs target existing and emerging markets, provide more work opportunities for Indigenous people and address the skilled labour shortage in the North.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

  • The NOHFC, Northern Development Offices and Small Business Enterprise Centres are available to support northern communities, businesses and other stakeholders in identifying economic development opportunities and assist in accessing government funding programs.

QUOTES

“The Humphrey Community Centre is a vital hub in Seguin. On behalf of the township, I’d like to thank NOHFC for investing in this asset. We also extend our gratitude to MPP Graydon Smith for consistently supporting our efforts to enhance quality of life in the region.” – Ann MacDiarmid, Mayor, Seguin Township

“Receiving this grant for the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame exhibition redevelopment has made a significant impact on the project, as we were faced with escalating material costs and inflationary pressures after the budget was established. NOHFC funding ensured we were able to execute the redevelopment without compromising on our vision in the face of rising costs.” – Jamie McGarvey, Mayor, Town of Parry Sound
