Statement From MPP Graydon Smith on the Near North District School Board’s Inability to Complete Construction on the Parry Sound School
August 15, 2025
“I am deeply disappointed and frustrated by the Near North District School Board’s inability to complete construction on the new school in Parry Sound in a timely and seamless manner. The Board’s mismanagement of this project has left students, parents, and educators in a prolonged state of uncertainty.
Our government committed $60 million to this Board-led project with a clear expectation that the school would be ready for the start of the 2025–2026 school year. That commitment was made to ensure West Parry Sound students would learn in a modern, fully equipped facility — not face a scenario that is now unclear, uncertain and unacceptable.
The residents of West Parry Sound deserve timely delivery on commitments made by the Near North District School Board. I urge the Board to take immediate and transparent action to assure students, parents and educators that matters concerning the upcoming school year are being dealt with effectively.
I also encourage on the Minister of Education to thoroughly review what has transpired and, when legislatively possible, consider intervening in the management of the Near North District School Board to ensure accountability and prevent similar failures in the future.”
